Common Causes of Hoarseness

Common Causes of Hoarseness

MA is fortunate to have seven esteemed and prominent medical surgeons host The Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeons of Western New England. Our seven skilled doctors are meeting the healthcare needs of Northhampton, Springfield residents, and the surrounding communities.

In addition, patients can relieve their ear, nose, and throat issues by visiting one of our two locations.

Our doctors are leading educators in otolaryngology and are devoted to having well-informed patients. Our practice sees many patients with raspy throats and is dedicated to explaining the common causes of this throat irritation.

The Common Causes of Changes in Voice Pattern

Our dedicated otolaryngology surgeons agree that the following causes can be attributed to temporary or chronic changes in voice patterns. They explain when you should or should not worry when throat irritations linger on too long.

One of our doctors at The Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeons of Western New England can explain if your hoarseness is minor or more complicated. Our doctor can obtain a proper diagnosis that provides the correct treatment by gathering your medical history and having you answer some questions about your symptoms.

Next, the doctor may have to recommend some testing and closely examine your voice box and soft tissue. These first steps may or may not lead to more required x-rays, blood work, or further tests.

Throat irritation can be minor, pesky, temporary, or more serious. However, throat irritation is not considered an illness but can stem from an underlying illness due to a few different factors, such as,

  • Infection
  • Overuse of your vocal cords
  • Speaking or shouting too loudly for too long
  • Gastroesophageal Reflux
  • Allergies
  • A virus affecting the upper respiratory tract
  • A common cold
  • Thyroid problems
  • Smoking
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • An injury to the throat
